How to recharge a car battery?

If you want to leave the battery on charge all the time, on a vehicle such as garaged classic cars, then it is advisable to have a battery charger with a trickle charge mode. If your charger doesn’t do trickle charging, leaving it connected for days at a time will damage the batteries.
When connecting the charging leads, do not have the engine running, as if the engine alternator is running it may conflict with your charger. Make sure the charger is also turned off at the mains supply. Connect the positive (Red) lead first, to the terminal on the battery that is marked with a + sign. If the battery holds its charge, is the car’s alternator providing an output? The only way to test this is with a voltmeter – a battery that is showing about 12.0-12.5v with the engine off, should be showing 13.8-14.8v while the engine. If it is still only reading around 12.0-13.0V when the engine is running, the alternator isn’t charging.
